Nevenka Then and Now

Join Nevenka East European Folk Ensemble for an online re-broadcast of our first live concert since the pandemic began. In honor of our 45th Anniversary, we’ll take a trip down memory lane with songs from the early days of Nevenka. The program will feature traditional women’s choral music from Croatia, Russia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Hungary. Special guests include a full Croatian tamburica band, our friends Orkestar Pechurka performing tunes from the Balkans and Anatolia, and some other surprises!
We’ll also welcome Dr. Anthony Shay, founding director of the Aman and Avaz Folk Ensembles, to speak about the world music movement in 20th century and the early days of Balkan music in Los Angeles.
For those new to Balkan music, it features complex harmonies and compelling rhythms, and can range from haunting and mysterious laments to upbeat dance tunes.
