Three of New England’s finest singer songwriters celebrate their new albums in a joint concert. Each artist will do a short solo set, then all three will trade songs ‘in the round’.
Called “one of New England’s best songwriters” by The Boston Globe, TERRY KITCHEN creates songs that are portraits of ordinary people and emotions, captured with extraordinary compassion, honesty and humor. He’s been performing on folk stages across the country since the 1990s, and his new album Lost Songs collects songs from all phases of Kitchen’s career, including the brand-new “Here’s to Us,” a celebration of love-in-progress, and “Nickel Bag,” about a small-time drug bust but really about how the system treats some of us differently than others. His songs have won the Mid-Atlantic and USA Song Contests and been runner-up in the John Lennon Song Contest, and have appeared in numerous films. In the 1980s he was the leader of the groundbreaking Boston band Loose Ties, whose experiences he recounts in his novel Next Big Thing, called “a great debut novel” by The San Francisco Book Review. TOM SMITH is an award-winning performer and songwriter, applying his old-school folk tradition to timeless stories of people’s wants, needs, struggles and triumphs. In the words of WUMB Boston folk radio host Dave Palmater, “Tom Smith writes songs that seem like they’ve always been there – a true folksinger.” This evening, Tom celebrates the release of “Apples & Cheese – new and used songs for kids and their grownups.” His performance will include some of those songs that can be appreciated by audiences of all ages. Singer and songwriter PAUL KAPLAN, winner of eleven ASCAP songwriting awards, has been an enthusiastic participant in the folk music world since the late 1960s. His most-covered songs are “I Had an Old Coat,” “Henry the Accountant” and “Call Me the Whale.” Pete Seeger said “I am a big fan of Paul Kaplan. I love his singing; I love his songs.” On February 20 Paul will be singing songs from “We Shall Stay Here,” his just-released album which contains twelve songs that reflect the way he faces the world: always upbeat, despite the hardships.
