About Folk Alliance International

Folk Alliance International (FAI) is an arts nonprofit founded in 1989 to connect folk music leaders aiming to sustain the community and genre. As the leading international voice for folk music, FAI is a member organization and worldwide community for artists, agents, managers, labels, publicists, arts administrators, nonprofits, venues, festivals, and concert series presenters. Folk music is broadly defined and includes a variety of genres in the musical arts and industry.

FAI convenes artists, music business industry professionals, and folk music communities on a global level with a mission to serve, strengthen, and engage the global folk music community through preservation, presentation, and promotion. FAI presents an annual event consisting of conference, awards show, and artist showcases as well as year-round programming.

About the Position

The Marketing & Programming Manager will be responsible to project manage, develop, and execute a marketing plan across channels and develop communications that will further the goals of FAI. This position requires a creative and strategic thinker who can use marketing expertise to positively position FAI within the music industry and speak to diverse members, donors, and shareholders.

The Marketing and Communications Manager will work closely with the Programming & Community Director to ensure that the organization's communications, programming, and marketing advance FAI’s strategic plan and mission.

The ideal candidate is a skilled project manager with experience in the music industry and/or nonprofits and a record of leading marketing efforts to inspire growth. This person excels in a team environment that values shared leadership and will step in to lead, do, or follow as the situation requires. A passion for music will help in this role, but musical experience is not required. FAI will prioritize a KC area resident, but we will consider a remote worker if it's the right candidate.

Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Marketing

  • Develop and implement comprehensive marketing strategies to promote our organization, events, and programming initiatives.
  • Build schedules and KPI’s to track growth across FAI’s audiences.
  • Strategically create engaging and persuasive marketing campaigns across various channels, including social media, email newsletters, website content, and press releases.
  • Lead the design and content teams to create visually appealing and compelling marketing materials, including graphics, videos, and written content to ensure high-impact communications.
  • Measure and analyze marketing campaign performance, adjusting strategies as needed to optimize reach, engagement, and conversion.
  • Understand and track marketing trends to adapt FAI to best practices in membership marketing, fundraising, social media, and other emergent marketing practices and work these practices into campaigns.
  • Strategically plan and execute marketing initiatives to achieve the following: grow the base of members, increase program participation, increase visibility in the music industry, strengthen the FAI and folk music brand, and further engage in the FAI community and industry at large.
  • Expand social media footprint by executing and updating all social media outlets.
  • Develop and execute other marketing initiatives and assets as developed in collaboration with the full FAI team.
  • Gather stories and photos of FAI programs and activities to effectively demonstrate impact in marketing and development activities.
  • Manage online advertising campaigns (via Google AdWords and social media advertising) to build external brand and top-of-funnel awareness
  • Ensure all marketing and communication pieces adhere to the organization's branding guidelines and that they are consistent across all external-facing materials and communications.
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of the FAI website and all print and electronic collateral, including the annual report, brochures, flyers, e-blast newsletter, promotions, and other.
  • Maintain the quality and integrity of marketing data and analytics and regularly report on metrics.
  • Work with outside vendors, including PR contractor or firm
  • In collaboration with the FAI senior team, manage marketing assets to partners (for our conference and other programs/events) and receive marketing assets from partners for distribution.
  • Maintain and build on existing partnerships to ensure music industry awareness of FAI.
  • Work on additional marketing and communications activities as directed by senior management.
  • Participate in radio, television, web, and print interviews as needed.

2. Collaboration, Leadership, and Strategy

  • Work collaboratively with all levels of the organization to integrate marketing efforts with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to staff and volunteers involved in marketing and communication activities.
  • Represent the organization at community events, conferences, and networking opportunities to promote our mission and build strategic partnerships.
  • Conduct market research and analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and challenges in the nonprofit and music industries.

Qualifications:

- Minimum of three years of experience in marketing preferably in the arts and culture sector and/or music industry.

- Proven track record of success in developing and executing marketing and fundraising strategies that achieve measurable results.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate the organization's mission and impact to diverse audiences.

- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.

- Proficiency in digital marketing platforms.

- Knowledge of current trends, best practices, and regulations in nonprofit marketing and development.
