Danza Mexica Calpulli Iskalli: Translation from Nahuatl to English: Calpulli – family, Iskalli - new beginning, born.
Calpulli Iskali founded in 2012 with the purpose of guarding Indigenous traditions through chant, music and dance to find physical identity and spiritual balance. Calpulli Iskali is not only a group of people trying to play Indian but a ceremonial family that honors ancestral traditions in the pursuit of spiritual fulfillment. “Even though we look Native Indian or have indian blood, we our hearts and actions are far from being so .” – Andres Ramirez
Ceremonial performances are limited to meaningful presentations. A main celebration is hueymiccailhuitl (Day of the Death) to welcome our relatives that come for replenishment to continue in their journey to Mictlan. There is also an annual equinox ceremony held as a prayer for good harvest. Ceremonies are also held in limited cultural events. The drum beat is a traditional rhythm, but the music from flutes and other instruments are composed by Andres Ramirez from Mexico and Amado Espinoza from Bolivia. The group's dancers are: Arelis Denise Flores-Ruvalcaba, Karen Lisondro, and Dario Rugerio.
Our event partner and neighbor Rochester Brewing provides free beer and coffee at all our shows! They’re locally owned and in love with the art and science of brewing beer and roasting coffee.
