Legal Summit
The Legal Summit, a partnership with the American Bar Association and FAI, will take place on Friday, February 21st during the Folk Alliance International Conference. The in-depth legal sessions are open to all conference attendees as well as attorneys looking to fulfill their CLE requirements in a unique environment.

- The Future of Music Creation: Are You Using AI or Is AI Using You? Join leading entertainment attorneys and industry experts for a critical discussion on artificial intelligence's impact on music creation and rights management. This panel will cover strategic approaches to licensing music for AI training, protecting copyright and publicity rights in the age of voice cloning, best practices for incorporating AI tools in music production, analysis of current litigation against major AI companies, and key contractual considerations for AI-assisted works. Artists will learn how to protect their rights while leveraging AI's creative potential.
- The Rules of The Road As most folk artists are well aware, the touring business has become bigger and more crucial than ever in today’s music industry. As the recorded music business has shrunk, live performances have become an essential source of revenue and exposure for artists across all musical genres, while many television shows, movies, brands, and even athletic organizations have incorporated touring as a key part of their overall strategies. This panel will cover current business and legal issues in the touring business, including a review of recent contracts, various types of income streams, the interplay between agents, managers, promoters, sponsors and record labels, and a discussion of what lies ahead.

- International Touring: The Permission Slips Having an international performing career requires being able to legally perform in countries outside of your own. Join this panel to hear from immigration lawyers and others speak about the rules and practical tips regarding crossing borders legally to work. This panel covers scenarios including non-Canadians coming to Canada, Canadians going to the US, and as well as Canadians and US citizens travelling overseas.
